An important part of any college program is how its peers view it. At Centennial College's (Automotive) Motive Power Technician – Technical program, students can rest assured with the offering's accreditation by the Canadian Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) National Accreditation Board. This not only means the offering has the respect of the industry, it also means that all of the in-school content is the same as the Automotive Service Technician (AST) apprenticeship qualification. This ensures Motor Vehicle Technician students are prepared to enter the industry as well as be successful on exemption testing for licensing qualification.
What else does this motor vehicle technician Canada offering have to offer? First and foremost, the program's curriculum offers know-how of the theory students need to enter the industry as well as demonstrations and applications of standard industry techniques and processes that are included/imbedded in the offering’s courses. This is achieved by splitting the Motive Power Technician program into four very structured semesters. During the first, courses are common to both the administration and technical streams, allowing students the opportunity to decide which aspect of the industry is best suited for then. The topics covered in this first semester are include applied mechanics, engines, transmissions, fuels, alignment, vehicle technology, mathematics and more. Meanwhile, the second semester places a focus on component design and includes topics such as transportation administration, applied vehicle dynamics, and higher levels of topics offered in the first semester. Finally, the last two semesters see students mastering the highest level of topics such as engines, alignment, transmission and others such as air conditioning, technical drawings, properties of materials and more.
Both supporting and supplementing the courses in the Motor Power Technician program are Centennial College's Ashtonbee Campus facilities. Known as Ontario's largest transportation centre, this location is fully equipped with laboratories that include a transmission lab, a engine lab, fuels, electrical, electronics, and chassis systems. In these labs, students use cars, car parts and the most up-to-date tools that are found in the industry to gain a real life perspective.
Applicants to the (Automotive) Motive Power Technician - Technical program are required to possess at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent or are 19 years of age or older. In addition, applicants must have completed the compulsory English 12C or U credit or skills assessment, or equivalent and the Math 11M or U, or 12C or U or skills assessment, or equivalent. Please note that possession of minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
Once students complete the Motive Power Technician program, they obtain an Ontario College Diploma and are equipped for various roles and sectors of the automotive industry, including: Automotive Apprentice, Service Advisor, Lead Hand, Repair Technician, Automotive Service and Parts Management/Departments, and Automotive Import/Exports.
