Attend a Human Resources College Program That Will Allow for Further Education
If you’re looking for a Human Resources college program that will not
only prepare you for immediate entry into the industry but will also
allow a smooth transition to further education, you may want to consider
Business Administration – Human Resources (co-op). This three-year
program allows eligible students who wish to continue their education to
participate in an articulated program with selected universities,
institutes and professional associations. These partnerships allow
graduates to apply academic credit towards further study and include:
Athabasca University, Lakehead University, Northwood University U.S.A.,
Royal Roads University, Ryerson University, and University of
Lethbridge. In addition, those who are not interested in further
credentials can enter the field where they may have duties that include:
recruiting, hiring, training, organization development, communication,
performance management, coaching, policy recommendation, salary and
benefits, team building, employee relations and leadership.
To
apply for this Human Resources college-level offering, students must
have completed at least an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or
equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. In addition, they must
possess the compulsory English 12C or U or skills assessment, or
equivalent and the Math 11C, M or U, or 12C or U or skills assessment,
or equivalent. Please note that there are further requirements upon
acceptance. Prior to beginning co-op, the following is required:
completion of employment pre-placement, completion of eight out of 10
courses in semesters one and two, a minimum C grade in COMM-170/171, and
minimum GPA of 2.5. Co-op is one of the most beneficial features of
this Human Resources college program. Taking place in semesters three,
four and five, it provides students with hands-on experience by seeing
them work three terms as paid employees in their field. This experience
not only allows students to put classroom learning into practice, but
also provides valuable contacts for future careers.
In preparation of co-op, students of the Human Resources College
program develop the ability to analyze and interpret financial and
accounting information for decision-making purposes. Legal issues are
covered from a proactive, rather than compliance perspective. Finally,
the use of integrated human resource systems software and computer
skills to manage information and support decision-making is taught. In
addition, Centennial College’s approach incorporates current trends in
the strategic management of human resources, the affirmation of
diversity and human rights, and the promotion of positive union and
management relations. As such, students develop expertise in all major
areas of human resource management such as: human planning, recruitment,
selection, orientation, employee training and development, occupational
health and safety, compensation and benefits, employee relations,
labour relations and human resource management systems.
It
should be noted that the first three semesters of this human resource
college offering are common to all business programs to give students a
good overview of business before specialization. Meanwhile specialized
human resource college courses include: Recruitment and Selection (both
federal and provincial human rights legislation affecting recruitment
and selection are examined. Scientifically based procedures in
recruitment and selection are introduced that meet technical,
professional, and Canadian legal standards); Employment Law (emphasis is
primarily on employment law in Ontario with selected references to
practices in other jurisdictions); Labour Relations (intended to assist
those with little or no prior knowledge of labour relations in acquiring
a basic level of knowledge about this subject); and more.
